Overnight Safari in Thar Desert, Rajasthan, India

The overnight safari in the desert was our favorite part of our 11 day trip. We rode in a jeep out to the desert with a family from South Korea. Although we had a flat tire on the way, our driver quickly put the spare on and we were on our way. We were dropped off near the camels that we would ride into the sand dunes on. The camels were so sweet and their caretakers treated them with kindness and respect. I was worried about the welfare of the camels, since I had seen the way the horses in Kufri were treated – but they were treated with compassion and that made me happy.

After an hour ride on the camels to the sand dunes, we stopped at our campsite. Dylan and I played in the sand dunes for awhile and then we had dinner. Our dinner was papad, chapati, steamed vegetables and rice. We thought it was delicious!! We camped in the desert overnight and were offered a tent but we chose to sleep on blankets on the sand. The view of the stars at night was stunning!! So many stars…. We had a fire built for us, because it soon became cold when the sun went down. When the morning came, they prepared breakfast for us, along with chai, and we packed up and went back to the spot where the jeep picked us up. If you ever have the chance to travel to the sand dunes outside of Jaisalmer and take an overnight safari on a camel, I highly recommend it.
