As a Fulbrighter, I get access to the cozy guesthouse located at the Fulbright House/USIEF headquarters in New Delhi. It was the nicest place that we stayed at during our adventures. It is in walking distance to the Agrasen ki Baoli monument, which was once used as a step well/water resevoir, in ancient times. It is now a protected monument by the Archeological Survey of India, and rightfully so. It is breathtaking and I did not tell Dylan anything about it, I just took him there. You walk through a narrow doorway at street level, and suddenly you are peering down a 60 meter long, 15 meter wide monument of stones and steps – leading so far down into the earth. It is unknown as to when this structure was built, but according to Wikipedia, it may have been constructed in the 10th century and perhaps reconstructed in the 14th century.
The Fulbright House is in walking distance to Connaught Place, which is a trendy area full of shops and cafes. We walked around for a few hours – it is a huge area. The streets became full of people ready to celebrate the new year. People were selling noise makers, street food, and anything you can possibly imagine. We had a nice dinner at a fancy place and walked back to the guesthouse. The police were already closing off the streets to cars for the night’s festivities. We were so tired from all of our travels, and our bellies were full from our delicious dinner that we were asleep before 10pm. Although I did wake up to the fireworks going off at midnight, I didn’t totally miss the ringing in the new year.
